This body of correspondence includes about 2,650 letters that Luther wrote between 1501 and 1546. Almost half of them were sent to friends and relatives; another considerable portion was addressed to the worldly and clerical authorities. Luther initially wrote in Latin. He later struck passionate to impetuous tones in the German language, dedicated himself to the pastoral solace, practical ethical advice and directed dogmatic questions at the holders of office. Luther's body of correspondence has shifted into the focus of theological interest in recent years.
